2014/12 Christmas Road Trip
As usual, we drove from Los Angeles to Silverthorne for Christmas, and we brought Moab and Hueco with us. We stayed in Williams, AZ the first night, and went to the Grand Canyon to take some early morning photos the next day. It was then on to Farmington, NM, with a stop at the Bisti Badlands. Sadly, it was too late when we arrived at Bisti to make it to the more famous formations, but we were able to find an interesting scene just before sunset. We visited Shiprock early the next morning. The sky was filled with clouds, but we did get a minute or two when the sun poked through to light up the rock. We were then off to Alamosa, CO, with a stop at the Cox Canyon Arch. We visited Great Sand Dunes NP that afternoon and the following morning, but unfortunately the clouds and snow never cleared. At least the dogs had a great time running on the dunes!
We had a few chances for sunrise photography in the mountains near Silverthorne, with one morning each at Ute Pass, Sapphire Point, and Crystal Lake. The light was never great, but the Sapphire Point morning wasn't bad.
We departed early for the drive home, and we had a couple hours in the late afternoon in Zion NP. After an overnight in St. George, UT, we woke up very early the next morning to make it to Valley of Fire SP in time for sunrise, and then continued home.
